– The Livingstone softball team dropped a conference doubleheader Wednesday to the Shaw Bears 9-5 and 16-7.

 

In the first game of the day the Blue Bears fought hard, but fell to Shaw 9-5.  Shaw got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on two hits.  Livingstone tied the game in the bottom of the second as it scored two runs on three hits and the game was tied 2-2 after two innings.

 

Mistakes cost the Blue Bears in the top of the third inning as they committed three errors which coupled with two Shaw hits led to three Bears runs.  Livingstone failed to score in the bottom of the third and Shaw led 5-2 after three innings.

 

In the fourth inning both teams scored one run a piece and Shaw led 6-3 after four innings.  After a scoreless fifth inning, Shaw scored three runs in the top of the sixth to open up a 9-3 lead and it held the six-run edge after six innings. 

 

Livingstone trailed by six runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and tried to get back into the contest.  Shaw got two quick outs, but then the Blue Bears were able to score two runs on two hits and one Shaw error, but that was all they could muster and fell 9-5.

 

Shannon Allen and Elicia Gilliam-Washington each recorded three hits in the first game.  Gilliam-Washington and Oni-ife Brevard each also had two RBIs. 

 

Livingstone got out to a strong start in the second game.  After giving up one run in the top of the first, the Blue Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the first on two hits and one Shaw error. 

 

The Blue Bear lead was short-lived as the Bears came back in the top of the second and scored five runs on three hits and one Livingstone error.  Livingstone scored one run in the bottom of the second and Shaw led 6-4 after two full innings.

 

After the top of the third inning, the Blue Bears trailed 7-4, but were able to three runs on one hit, one error and some wild Shaw pitching.  After three innings the teams were tied 7-7. 

 

Shaw really got the offense going in the top of the fourth as it scored four runs and added one more in the top of the fifth to lead 12-7 after five innings.  Shaw added four more runs in the top of the sixth and after Livingstone was unable to score the game ended after six. 

 

Gilliam-Washington added two more hits in the second game in three at-bats.  Brevard had three RBIs in the losing effort.

 

Livingstone’s record fell to 4-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference.  Shaw improved to 6-18 overall and 6-4 in the CIAA.

 

The Blue Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, March 30 at 1 p.m. when they host the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University for a CIAA doubleheader.
