SALISBURY, NC – The St. Augustine’s College Falcons used a 16-0 run in the middle of the second half as they downed the Blue Bears 87-74 Thursday evening.
Junior forward Jarred Stockton led the Blue Bears with 22 points and six rebounds while senior guard Aaron Caruthers scored 18 points and senior forward Megail Cannon added 10 points.
The first half was a back and forth battle between the Blue Bears and Falcons. Livingstone held a small 10-9 lead with 15:07 left in the first half, but St. Augustine’s went on a 6-0 run to go up 15-10 with 12:46 on the clock. Livingstone responded with a 10-4 run of their own to regain a 20-19 lead.
St. Augustine’s was able to get back out to a five-point lead with just over six minutes left in the first half. The Falcons continued to lead by seven points with 1:41 to play, but the Blue Bears were able to take the last four points of the half to go into the break trailing by three at 35-32.
Jarred Stockton led the Blue Bears with eight points at the half while Aaron Caruthers added seven. Keith Darden, Megail Cannon and Virgil Taylor each had three rebounds.
The Blue Bears had the league-leading Falcons on the ropes as the clock ticked under 10 minutes to play in the second half. Livingstone led held a five-point lead with 9:44 to play in the second half, but that lead quickly evaporated. After the Blue Bears led by five, the Falcons went on a 16-0 scoring run to take an 11-point edge with 5:10 to play. That run spelled defeat for the Blue Bears as they were unable to overcome it as they fell 87-74.
The Blue Bears shot 44.1 percent from the field for the game including 39.3 percent from three-point range. The Falcons won the battle in the paint, out-scoring the Blue Bears 22-14. The Livingstone reserve players outplayed the Falcons’ 33-24.
With the loss, the Blue Bears fell to 10-12 overall, 7-9 in the conference and 2-4 in the division. St. Augustine’s improved to 20-3 overall, 14-2 in the conference and 6-0 in the division.
The Blue Bears will be back in action on Saturday evening when they host the Chowan Hawks at 7:30 p.m. at Trent Gymnasium.
