SALISBURY, N.C.- (Saturday, September 20, 2008) Bowie State held off a late Livingstone College rally in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to emerge with a 15-10 victory on Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Livingstone College.
After blocking a 25-yard field goal attempt the Blue Bears put together an 11-play, 49 yard drive that fell short of the end zone. The victory improves Bowie State to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in CIAA action. Meanwhile, Livingstone falls to 0-1 in the CIAA and 0-4 overall.
Tariq Jones highlighted the Bulldogs offense with 31 carries for 147 yards and one TD on the ground, while quarterback Jason Scott completed 7-of-14 passes for 84 yards along with one TD strike. Defensively, Bowie State’s Alvin Cox led the way with 6.5 tackles and two sacks.
Signal caller Steven Williams converted 12-of-30 passes for 179 yards, including a 79-yard pass to Chris Peoples. Peoples led all receivers with 87 yards, while Lakeem Graves had a team-high 14 yards on the ground.
Robert Massey came through with another solid performance for the Blue Bear defense, accounting for nine tackles (10 assisted), which were both game-highs.
In the second drive of the game for the Blue Bears, Steven Williams connected on a 79-yard pass with Chris Peoples for the game’s first points to give Livingstone a 7-0 advantage. Peoples streaked down the sideline to beat the defender for the TD at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter.
Bowie State responded on the ensuing possession, capping off a four play, 68-yard drive with a 2-yard scamper by Tariq Jones. After a failed conversion, the Blue Bears held to a 7-6 advantage.
Livingstone extended the lead to 10-6 on a 39-yard field goal by Dominic Piscitello, with 5:01 remaining in the first half. Bowie State closed out second quarter scoring when Jason Scott completed a six-yard TD pass in the corner of the end zone to Anthony Greene. The drive, which began at the Bulldogs 40-yard line finished in seven plays that covered 60 yards while taking 3:34 on the clock.
The Blue Bears of Livingstone College will be on the road next weekend and will travel to Lincoln, PA to face the Tigers of Lincoln University. The game will be played at Avon Grove High School Stadium with a kickoff time for 1:00p.m.
